5 Tips to Save You Money when Gardening

If you or your family are interested in starting a garden but you’re concerned about cost, this post can help ease your financial worries. While some things will cost a little more upfront, in the long run, you will be saving money.

It’s easy to invest a bundle of money every year, building a pretty yard. Using these five pointers, you will be able to save money in both this and future gardening periods.

  • Plan your vegetable garden close to where your neighbors have their garden so you can share your vegetables when they’re ready. If your neighbors don’t have a garden, friends and family members would be glad to take some fresh produce off your hands, thus saving them some money as well.
  • Whenever possible choose perennials and vines in lieu of annuals for your flowerbeds. As they expand each year, cut them back, and share with your friends and family so you both can have lovely gardens and save money at the same time.

  • Compost your kitchen excess, as well as your coffee grounds.  The outcome is much more useful than potting soil you can buy from any nursery or hardware store. Aside from your time and labor, the price is right, and this is definitely worthwhile!
  • Rather than using mulch or straw, instead, use gravel or small rocks in your garden as protection for your plants. Gravel or small stones allow for excellent drainage, and water settling around your roots will cause them to mold and kill your plants. This will save you money, as they’re a one-time purchase. No more buying mulch in the spring and fall of each year.
  • By spending the money now on quality gardening tools, you will save in the long run.  Sure, they’re more expensive; but, they will last for years, saving you money because you don’t need to replace them every planting season.  The same can be said for gardening gloves- make sure you buy the best you can afford so they last all season.
  • Containers you have around the house, such as 5-gallon buckets can be used for a low cost. Check around your house to see what you have on hand.
  • If your job makes it difficult to constantly maintain a garden, look into plants that are low-maintenance.
