Life Together After Tragedy
We left our son’s house after 8 1/2 months, as we decided to get a place of our own. We first drove to Michigan, to go camping with one of our best friends Jerry and Valeri. Jerry and I served in the Army together, and I met Val when she came from the states to Germany to see him. This was our first trip away in a long time, and we felt it was quite deserving. We made memories, new friends, and had a lot of fun!
Before we went camping, we got together at Jerry’s childhood friend’s house. He and his family were very welcoming, and we had fun just hanging out. The next day we met Jerry’s brother and sister and a couple more of his family.
Becky surprised her (at the time) online friend, Lisa Charleston, by letting her know we were in the Detroit area. We knew she lived around there, so we decided to meet with her and her husband Carl for lunch. We all instantly hit it off, and had a good time having lunch together. Lisa and Carl are two of the most nicest people you’ll ever meet.
The next day it was time to go camping. We met at Jerry and Val’s house, loaded up our stuff, and we went to get the camper at a storage facility. Then came the drive to the camp site. We arrived and got settled. We met some of Jerry and Val’s good friends: Jim and Angela, Ed and Tisa. It was a great few days, relaxing and having fun. I went through social media withdrawal, as there was not a strong signal for my phone!
We came back to New York, and onto the next part of our journey: a cottage on Little Lake. What a peaceful setting it was, and a small, cottage. It was a little cramped, but, we made it work. We had a couple of family get togethers there and the guys went out fishing and took their kids fishing, if they wanted to go. Starting the summer there, and ending it going into Fall, we could notice the changes in the leaves. Fall is so beautiful in our little part of the world!
We left the cottage October 1st, as the owner had to get it ready for winter. We checked in to a hotel in Horseheads, and we stayed there for FOUR months. We made plenty of friends with the staff, and they were all very nice.
The hotel we stayed at didn’t have a kitchenette, so we ate out a lot, which I kind of lost some of my cooking skills.
Now, we’ve come full circle, staying at Becky’s sister’s house. We stayed there the weekend that the fire happened. Horseheads is more city life, and it’s nice to be back in the country again!
It sounds like the break was just what you needed! Lots of family and friend get-togethers! I cannot get over those images from the hotel you stayed in – the change from October to December is remarkable! So sorry to hear about your home x Sim
What a wonderful location for the cottage! Its great that you managed to meet online friends and they were just as wonderful as you expected them to be.
The cottage setting looks lovely I would love to be able to stay somewhere like that just to get away from everything. And meeting online friends and hitting it off is great we have done the same last year x
Lots of moving around for you guys, but it seems like you’ve had lots of fun moving around and seeing people x
You’ve definitely had your fair share of life experiences. What doesn’t break you makes you stronger x There’s nothing better than kicking back with friends and what a view too. Love how the seasons change!

It’s great to hear that your having a good time. Meeting old friends is ace and great for the soul. Sorry to hear about your house, but I wish that you have bigger and better things on the horizon. Good luck. Love the pictures too!
I love the scenery, what a beautiful place and certainly good space to recover and recharge. It must be lovely to just go out on the lake and fish. Perfection.
Sounds like a lovely break away! I definitely need to follow in your footsteps and take some time away.
How lovely that you got to catch up with friends and family! My eldest would love that break for fishing! Looks so idyllic there too from your photographs
