I want to share with you some of the bands that were a big part of my childhood.
Van Halen
I’m the youngest of seven siblings. I have five older brothers and one sister. My brother’s music tastes rubbed off on me. My brother Joe was a HUGE influence on me when it came to music. I remember hearing the first Van Halen album on 8-track, and I was in awe!
From Eddie Van Halen’s innovative guitar style, David Lee Roth’s singing and showmanship, to Michael Anthony and Eddie’s brother Alex laying down the groove on bass and drums, respectively, Van Halen has been THAT band that has always stuck with me. Eddie’s guitar style reinvented the way many guitar players approached the guitar in the late 70’s. I vividly recall many guitar players trying to imitate his instant legendary style and sound. If you were to interview any rock guitarist from the 80’s through today, Eddie’s name will come up in the conversation as an inspiration.
Ozzy Osbourne
Ozzy was the lead singer for the band Black Sabbath. In my personal opinion, they ARE the godfathers of heavy rock music. Their style of “gloom and doom” influenced so many bands over the last forty-plus years. Guitarist Tony Iommi’s riffs and Ozzy’s writing style and singing, plus bassist Geezer Butler and Drummer Bill Ward laid the foundation to the genre we know has heavy metal. Ozzy left the band in 1979 and formed his own band. He has introduced several guitar players to rock music, most notably Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde. Ozzy will always be one of my favorite performers, whether it’s with Black Sabbath or his own band.
ZZ Top
My brother Doug got me into ZZ Top. The groove and blues-style guitar playing of Billy Gibbons really left a long-lasting positive effect on me. That “Little Ol Band from Texas” has entertained audiences for more than fifty years, and they’re still going strong today! I remember spending weekends at my brother’s house, and we would listen to ZZ Top all the time! Being a native of Texas, I am proud to call ZZ Top one of my favorite bands!
Sir Elton John
Sir Elton John is a phenomenal pianist and an incredible showman. His iconic songs are still popular today. Some of his greatest hits include Crocodile Rock, I’m Still Standing, and Rocket Man. Being a rocker, I bet you’re surprised that I’m a fan of Sir Elton’s music! I’m a man of different tastes when it comes to music! If you’ve seen the movie Rocket Man, it will give you a personal connection with the man, the myth, the legend. Cliche, I know!
Queen
Undoubtedly a household name, Queen rocked like no other with their unique style of “opera rock”. That was singer Freddie Mercury’s vision. One can listen to Bohemian Rhapsody and you’ll know. Playing their opera style, including heavy drums and bass, Queen was a band that was a cut-above. No band has ever come close to imitating their style. They literally rocked the world with their performance at Live Aid on July 13, 1985.
These are just a few of the many musicians listed on Rock and Roll Scene’s website. The prints are 11×14 and 16 X 20 inches. Give dad a limited-edition print of his favorite musician. They’re perfect for the man-cave!
