Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret Movie Review
Going Back 43 Years Ago, When I was 11
I cannot believe it was 43 years ago when I first read “Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret”. I thought it was such a great book. I can’t tell you how many times I read it between that age and probably until I was 14. You have to realize that being 11-14 years old is different in 1980 than in 2023. I think my Mom or parents had the “talk” with me before I received or bought the book. But looking back, I do not remember the talk as much as reading the book.
It also amazes me that it took 53 years for the book to go from its first print in 1970 to a movie in 2023.

Watching the Movie-My Review
When I started to watch the movie, it took me right back to reading the book after all of these decades. The film begins with Margaret (played by Abby Ryder Fortson) returning from summer camp to their home in New York City to move to New Jersey at eleven years old. This means leaving her Grandma (played by Kathy Bates) (her Dad’s (played by Benny Safdie) Mom) and everything she knows to attend a new school.
This, of course, is during a very crucial time in a young 11-year-old’s time of life.
Margaret meets new friends going through the same preteen stages of life as she is. She is invited into their “girls club,” where they discuss getting their period and boys. They also talk about rumors of one of the girls in their grade who has matured more than the rest and what she supposedly does with the other boys. They wonder who will get their period first and do an exercise to increase their chest size. “We must. We must, and we must increase our bust.”
Join Margaret, her friends, and her family for an enjoyable hour and forty-five minutes of fun and laughs. You can purchase it on Amazon digitally or on Blu-ray or DVD.

Sharing the Love
Also, through the years, I bought the book for my oldest niece when she was 11, then again when my granddaughter was 9. (My granddaughter has yet to read it, but I wanted to make sure she had a copy when she was ready.)
