A Child Lost by Michelle Cox

I was so excited to have the opportunity to read ‘A Child Lost’ by Michelle Cox. I hadn’t read the other novels in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard 5 novel series but that didn’t matter. I was able to know exactly what was going on as Michelle’s books are stand-alone books.

After reading this novel I want to read the others as her writing is memorable. I enjoyed the characters of Elsie and Henrietta. Elsie has an unquestionable love for Gunther who takes care of a child named Anna. He brought her over from Germany in search of her mother, Liesel Klinkhammer. Who left Germany and vowed she would come back for Anna once she had settled. Yet she never did return.

Meanwhile Henrietta and Clive lost their baby to be in a miscarriage. This has caused Henrietta great grief after trying to have a baby with Clive for some time. Her depression overcomes her and she cannot quite get herself back to living her life.

It is at that time that Elsie asks her to come meet her as she has some news she would like to share. Henrietta is reluctant because she doesn’t want to see her mother and have to deal with how she acts towards her.

This is the point that the story gets more exciting and you will not want to put the book down. As the story unfolds further you will want to find out what case can be found for Henrietta by Clive to get her out of her funk. Or is it Elsie that has the perfect case for Henrietta? You will have to get a copy of your own to find out.

I wasn’t so sure about this book when I first started reading but I always give a book a chance. I was not dissapointed. Michelle frames her characters in a way that you feel like you are a part of the story. She gives background and her descriptions of each character will make you remember them past finishing the novel.

Meanwhile, Elsie implores Clive and Henrietta to help her and the object of her budding love, Gunther, locate the whereabouts of one Liesel Klinkhammer, the German woman Gunther has traveled to America to find and the mother of the little girl, Anna, whom he has brought along with him. The search leads them to Dunning Asylum, where they discover some terrible truths about Liesel. When the child, Anna, is herself mistakenly admitted to the asylum after an epileptic fit, Clive and Henrietta return to Dunning to retrieve her. This time, however, Henrietta begins to suspect that something darker may be happening. When Clive doesn’t believe her, she decides to take matters into her own hands . . . with horrifying results.
